Porting software is hard. Thing is, SFM was never meant to be released to the public, as it's an in-house piece of animation software that allowed Valve to not have to make videos in the SDK, and it came out to us with the Pyrovision update as a way of getting free marketing. It's a miracle we have it in the first place, there was just a leaked version that existed before which was way worse than the one we have now. I'm hopeful that there's going to be an update that'll be nothing more than an asset dump some time far in the future, let alone something that improves the depth of field or improves render quality like higher quality shadow texturemaps, or fixes the AVI bug that's been fixed for nearly 20 years that Valve still hasn't implemented. Additionally: Source also doesn't play very nicely with Macs in the first place. Well if SFM isn't smooth, then it means it isn't compatible. If a game isn't smooth, it isn't compatible From a developer's perspective, this isn't entirely untrue.

There's very little point in developing software for a set of hardware that cannot run it optimally. It is far better to use your limited resources on improving the software for its existing platforms. Also just because a game does not run smoothly does not mean it is not compatible.

While that is sometimes the case, it is not always This is a complex matter. If your hardware cannot run the software smoothly, it's likely below minimum spec. While hardware below minimum spec can often run the software, developers will not support its compatibility and any compatibility issues in further software updates. You give some very fair points, however I disagree. There's very little point in developing software for a set of hardware that cannot run it optimally. It is far better to use your limited resources on improving the software for its existing platforms.

This is true from a developer's perspective and you are 100% correct. However from a business perspective, there is a lot to gain from opening up your software to other OS's. I know Valve is pro-linux though I do not know if SFM is available on Linux, however many people do use Macintosh. By not having that option you do lose many potential users (this of course may not be Valve's perspective). If your hardware cannot run the software smoothly, it's likely below minimum spec. This is true, however I think it is fair to say that many games that use the Source Engine along with SFM itself do hog CPU resources more than they should and by that I would claim that the Source Engine is not as well optimized as it should.

There is little reason for SFM to be so extremely taxing performance-wise while competing software such as Blender and Maya are not plagued by these issues. Plus when it comes to the Source Engine, specs are not always very accurate due to said CPU hogging. You can have an dual core i5 and get very good performance, but if you have a 4 core AMD CPU with a little less clock speed, performance is significantly worse (inb4 amd is bad meme). Now I do not know the specifications of Mac PCs, but I have a feeling that optimizing to Macs (performance wise not OS wise) would not be that difficult of a task relative to what they are capable of. Well of course no computer and or laptop would blow up just by running a program.

Thats a joke. The point is, if the Computer doesn't meet the specs required to run the program, it means that you're not going to be able to run the program smoothly.

People relie on the minimal specs required to enjoy the program. Although you're still able to enjoy the program although it doesn't run smoothly, people would still shit on the developers for lying and such. Remember when an Attack on Titan game was released on steam and people who met the required specs bought it? Well the specs were wrong and a shit ton of people complained saying they were lied to.

If SFM was on Mac, people would complain that Mac is unable to run SFM and say that they wasted their time downloading it in the first place. Okay, what happend 7 months ago on tf2, Meet Your Match What did the community do? How did Valve feel? Annoyed Take Meet Your Match and change it to SFM's specs required to run SFM on Mac not smoothly, people would complain because it isn't smooth and the Specs they were told they needed isn't real. Thats what AOT game meant, you have the Specs they said is required but you are still unable to run it. So people complain because they wasted time and money.

SFM is free but it takes a lot of time to download it. So people would waste their time trying to download it and then say they can't run it smoothly although the specs required is what they have, for OP's question, Mac's specs.
